History of the Eagle Mountain International Church
In 1941, Norman Vincent Peale, a Harvard-educated minister, founded the Eagle Mountain International Church in Altadena, California. The church was initially a nondenominational Christian ministry that preached salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
The church struggled initially and only had around 50 members. However, the church began to grow rapidly in the 1960s and by 1975, it had over 10,000 members. During this time, the church also started to spread outside of California. In 1979, the church acquired land in Orem, Utah and began construction on an unprecedented large compound called “Eagle Mountain.” The compound would eventually have a capacity for 10,000 worshipers and be home to a university as well as several churches.
The Eagle Mountain International Church experienced significant growth during the 1980s and 1990s but has since declined in membership. As of 2010, the church has about 4,500 members spread across 60 congregations worldwide.
