Keyes grew up in foster homes and experienced a lot of neglect. I don’t think I was ever hugged, kissed or told ‘I love you’ when I was growing up, he says. In my family we were taught to take care of ourselves. The only time he would see his parents was on Sundays, when they would visit him at the group home. The first thing they always did was ask for money, he says.
He admits to some addictions, including alcohol and drugs. But after surviving a near-fatal car accident, Keyes became sober and focused on his career as an actor. He realized that if he didn’t change his lifestyle soon, he wouldn’t be alive much longer. Keyes has also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but he’s found ways to manage it through exercise, therapy and medication. When I’m not busy running around like a chicken with its head cut off, he jokes about the diagnosis.
He was homeless at age 16.
I was a teenage dad and I had no idea how to take care of my kids, he recalls. We were living in a shelter and it was really tough, but then we got an opportunity to live in this apartment building that was being renovated.
He says he credits the Fresh Air Fund with getting him back on his feet.
I’ve been blessed with being able to provide for my family and I want them to have more than what I had growing up, he says. My number one priority is my family.
