A person who I have the utmost respect for is Alexandra Horvath. She is a determined and admirable woman who has learned how to learn, deal with anxiety head on, and taken hold of her life’s desire through embracing her mental health journey. When Alexandra was three years old she found out that both of her parents had passed away from AIDS-related illness after spending weeks in an African hospital with them. Alexandra’s father contracted HIV from his own mother when he was just 13 months old because his uncle raped his mother and infected both of them with HIV as well.
Alexandra’s mom got HIV from a blood transfusion during childbirth; this led to the birth of their second child who died just eight months later. Alexandra would go on to be adopted by her aunt and grandparents and would also lose one of her uncles to suicide.
Alexandra attended Bryn Mawr College where she studied Sociology, Peace Studies, Gender & Women’s Studies, International Relations (minor), while interning at UNICEF headquarters in New York City. She credits Professor Kurt Schneiderman with inspiring her lifelong passion for human rights law and peacemaking.
