In February of 2019, the newest installment in the Arkham series was announced to be Batman: Arkham City. It was later confirmed that the game would be set within the city of Gotham, and would focus on the Wayne family’s unraveling conspiracy. The game has now released, and we have been able to dive a bit deeper into its background.
Arkham City is based off of Batman’s first major encounter with Joker in the 1940s. The story focuses on how Batman survived an attack by Joker, as well as his subsequent confrontation with him in prison. This event ties directly into Bruce Wayne’s training as a Batman, and it sets up a large portion of the game’s narrative.
The city itself is also based off of real-world locations, such as New York City and Arkham Asylum. However, certain aspects have been altered or added for the game’s sake. For example, parts of Gotham are much more chaotic than they would be in reality – this was done to make gameplay more challenging and exciting.

To start, the game runs at a resolution of 1080p on Xbox One and PS4. However, there are some graphical enhancements that can be applied to make the game look better on PC. For my testing I used the Nvidia GTX 770 with 4GB of VRAM and ran the game at Ultra settings with AA enabled.
The main positive change that you will notice is in the city itself. The buildings now look much more detailed and offer more opportunities for customization. There are also a lot more NPC’s on foot this time around, meaning that they are much more likely to interact with you as you explore the city. In particular, I found that there were a lot of fights taking place between gangs which provided an interesting backdrop to my exploration.
On the negative side, certain textures seem to have been downgraded slightly in comparison to console versions of the game. This was most noticeable when climbing up scaffolding or negotiating narrow gaps – both tasks seemed harsher on PC than 5120x1440p 329 batman arkham city background console due to this loss of detail.
