What is the Best Way to Get Rid of Insects?

If you have a lot of insects in your garden, there are a few different ways you can get rid of them. While the conventional method may involve a spray or an insecticide, several natural solutions can be used. These include Neem oil, Diatomaceous earth, and Capsaicin.

Diatomaceous earth

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a natural and effective insect repellent. It can kill ants, carpet beetles, cockroaches, silverfish, and fleas. You can also use it to dust your windows and doors to keep bugs away.

Diatomaceous earth works by grinding the exoskeletons of insects. This causes hundreds of abrasions on the insect’s body, eventually leading to death.

It’s also an excellent tool for keeping plants moist. However, the silica in the diatomaceous earth can cause lung damage, silicosis, and severe lung disease. That’s why following the instructions for cleaning your diatomaceous earth is essential, as listed on the product label.

There are several types of diatomaceous earth. The pool grade is for pool filters, while the food grade is for pesticide treatments.

Neem oil

Neem oil is a natural, organic, and environmentally friendly insecticide. It is derived from the seeds of the neem tree, a native of India.

The chemical compounds in neem oil have two main functions. One is to control soft-bodied pests. And the other is to suppress viruses that damage plants.

While it may not be completely effective against all insects, it is a safe, nontoxic pesticide for most people. If you have a houseplant that is getting bugged, neem oil can be used to keep them away. However, it can take up to two weeks for the insecticide to fully affect the bugs.

Neem oil also helps prevent fungus gnats and aphids from feeding on garden plants. The chemical Azadirachtin in neem oil disrupts insects’ bodies and metabolic functions. This makes the plant unattractive to them.

Horticultural oil

Horticultural oil is a type of insecticide that is often used to control insects. These oils can be very effective in controlling certain diseases and pests. They are often applied in a spray format. Different types of horticultural oil sprays are used for different purposes.

Unlike most other insecticides, horticultural oil is not poisonous. However, it does have the potential to affect the metabolism of the insect. For this reason, horticultural oils should be applied with great caution.

The primary active ingredient in neem oil is Azadirachtin. It also has fungicidal and repellent properties. Neem oil is known to be beneficial against powdery mildew but is less effective against other plant diseases.

If you’re not sure if a particular horticultural oil is right for your needs, always read the chemical label. Using horticultural oil in excessive quantities may damage wine grapes and other shrubs.

Capsaicin

Capsaicin is a compound found in hot peppers and other chilies that has been used as a repellent for various insects, including bears and bearded dragons. Studies have shown that Capsaicin is an insect repellent and can be used indoors. But it also has some harmful effects. Some people are susceptible to Capsaicin and may experience nausea and even temporary blindness if they ingest it.

A study involving a model organism, Drosophila melanogaster, showed that Capsaicin affected the lifespan and health of the insects. It influenced the timing of pupal formation and reduced the fitness of the progenies.

The authors of the paper concluded that Capsaicin interferes with the development of the intestinal barrier and causes oxidative stress that, in turn, leads to an immune response. This stress-induced activation of the intestinal immune system is considered to be a predictor of stress-induced mortality.

Boric acid

Boric acid is a chemical often used to get rid of insects. It has herbicidal and insecticidal properties and is derived from the mineral rate. These properties make it a good choice for keeping bugs out of your home. But before you try it, you need to know a few things about it.

First, you’ll want to keep it out of your eyes. Boric acid can be corrosive to your skin. So wear protective clothing and keep your children out of it. Also, you may want to put it in places where your pets can’t reach it.

You can also use it to kill ants. It can be mixed with sugar and soaked into cotton balls. Once ready, they can be placed into ant nests or trails.
